ELUSIVE ORGANISM

Elusive Organism is a piece informed by structural optimization process specifically designed for strength and weaknesses of 3D printed Resin. Inspired by the drawings of Ernst Haeckel combined with the transparency and intricacy of the material gives life to an illuminating, organic, elusive organism. The top is crafted out of recycled Messmate timber using three axis CNC flip milling. The intricate pattern transitions through the materials. The delicate and brittle Resin is topologically optimized to take human weight using grasshopper plugin Amoeba. The proportions are dictated by factors such as time, cost, and printer dimensions. The elusive organism captivates the observer and brings imagination to reality, before floating away. 

This is a bespoke piece of furniture with a custom-made light. This is made using resin printing the light shell and adding a remote-controlled mechanism inside. This allows the stool to be used a lamp, aswell.

TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION

This design is constructed by its limitations. That is the time, cost and load bearing capacities. It takes a minimum of 24 hrs. to print something in resin that could be used in this furniture. It costs about 30 cents per cm3, which adds up quickly. It’s optimized to take max 1 kilo newton or 100 kgs.  If we had all the money and time to make this, the design wouldn’t exist.

The base-form is topologically optimized in Grasshopper plugin Ameba with customized material setting to density, young’s modulus and Poisson number of resin. Later this output mesh was remodeled by adding connections based on our pressure tests. Finally, we added texture to exhibit the details that can be achieved with 3D resin printing.

In a nutshell I have designed a workflow, if the base form changes the design changes. The possibilities are endless. With the help of this workflow, we were able to make a brittle material sittable. We believe that 3D printing and manipulating materials is the future of craftsmanship.
